What if the wittiest farmer doesn't always catch the ball?

A couple weekends ago, after making our rounds at Agri-Trade in Red Deer, Michelle and I headed south for the weekend! … South being the beautiful city of Calgary, Alberta of course. Where else would a couple parents choose to spend four kid-free days…?

Thanks again to Michelle’s parents for taking care of our kids, cat and turtle that weekend! We truly enjoyed ourselves and can honestly say we feel a little mixed on our previous notion that “Calgary mocks, because Edmonton rocks!” … We both rock. Just in different, oddly similar ways.

After a few dinners out, an in-room couples massage at the Riverside Inn in Kensington, and a plethora of spontaneous shopping sprees, Michelle and I came to terms with leaving the chinook-enchanted city and began our journey back home. But before merging on to the Deerfoot, we noticed a set of flashing lights further down the trail, followed by a debatably long-necked bottle of vehicles.

“What should we do!?” I said in a panic, driving past the Edmonton-bound merge lane. “How far is it to Stoney Trail?”

“I don’t know,” Michelle said. “Why don’t you just pull over somewhere so we can figure it out.”

Somewhere not too far from the Calgary airport, we sat in an empty parking lot analyzing our options. The quickest way to get to Stoney Trail was, funny enough, via Deerfoot Trail, so that wouldn’t have made sense… After a few minutes, we decided we were unfit to navigate our way around the traffic jam. It was time to face the music.

I’m a little embarrassed to say… it took all but two minutes to make it through the “traffic jam”. A little town problem in a big city world most Calgarians wouldn’t have even blinked at.

Do you ever do anything like that…? Try to work around a problem so fervently you end up making things worse?

What ifs… They have the power to influence every decision. Just ask Jason Maas, coach of the Edmonton Eskimos. Down seven with less than two minutes to go in Sunday’s Western CFL Final, Maas seemed to be gambling for the tie, but instead, chose to kick a field goal in hopes his defense would get the ball back for a possible game-winning touchdown… Maybe there’s some validation to “Calgary mocks“.

Whether it was the right decision, and it obviously wasn’t, I think what got to Maas was an overactive mind, amped-up on adrenaline. It’s a great idea to have a strategy, but a strategy can only prove effective if it has the time to play out.

Overthinking – though undoubtedly better than not thinking at all – gets the best of us sometimes. In the Princess Bride, Vizzini challenges the Man in Black to an inconceivable – and fatal – battle of wits, only to discover both goblets had been poisoned the whole time. In contrast, billionaire investor, Warren Buffett, has made plenty of great decisions by sitting on his hands and never deciding.

If you’re sitting on grain you had already intended to sell, and have the time and money to do it, time will tell on whether it’s the right strategy. Hindsight, as they say, is 20/20. But, if you change your strategy after every market report you read or every time you get off the phone, do you have a plan at all…?

Don’t get me wrong. Thinking is good! At Agfinity, we think every day! We’re paid to do it. Barley: Still seeing strength in the feed barley market for the next few months, but prices are still being kept in check by corn. A smaller barley supply has supported prices this year, but if buyers can’t get the supply they need, they’ll be forced to import corn. Corn and barley trading at similar levels into Lethbridge. Call us with offers! It’s a good time to set targets for pricing into Jan-Feb!

Wheat: Feed wheat prices are still holding and we currently have some strong pricing into January. Gradable wheat markets had a bit of a recovery yesterday likely due to short covering and slight concern over dry weather in the US that has winter wheat crops down at 52% good to excellent.

Oats: Prices have remained flat on oats, but offers at higher levels have gotten interest from buyers recently for mid to late winter delivery (Jan-March) for 2CW oats. Call us with offers or send us a sample.

Canola: Canola futures down currently as things are quiet in the export market due to 30% duty on crude palm oil imposed by India. Seems they’re wanting to limit import and use up their own surplus.

Peas: Yellows: Although we do have buyers, delivered bids for 2CW yellows are now down at $6-6.50/bu. Feed bids are only slightly under 2CW yellows with quicker movement available. Greens: Prices are a little better for greens with delivered bids now at $8.00-$8.20/bu. India currently protecting domestic farm prices with higher than anticipated duties; this could keep pea bids under pressure into the new year.

Barley and Wheat prices in Lethbridge are $218-220 December – January. There is no spread between Barley and Wheat currently. Corn is being offered into Lethbridge between $216-218 dlvd J-F-M, keeping buyers from placing Barley and Wheat contracts any further out than they absolutely need to. Buyers are trying to get coverage for Dec – Jan but will be forced to book Corn cars if Barley and Wheat sellers close their bins and push the price higher than Corn contracts.

Sellers, keep in mind, when a feedlot books Corn they have typically been buying to cover 2-3 months for 40-50% of their rations. Feeders have been reluctant to feed 100% and run into an issue if cars are delayed.

Edmonton area buyers are getting consistent coverage out to April and are softening bids the further out they go. Once they are full, options north of Edmonton could be limited.
