Where in the World are Grain Prices Headed?

By March 16, 2022Blog

Thank you Cheryl Morse for the beautiful photo.

As pricing volatility and supply uncertainty rage on, Agfinity has taken this week to identify some strategies and mindset changes for navigating these markets to ensure that you and your farm are able to capitalize and make the most no matter what the market does.

The ongoing crisis in Russia-Ukraine will continue to have a huge effect on commodity volatility, putting pressure on anything from crude oil to fertilizers to precious metals. Many of us are already feeling the direct implications or rising fuel costs and higher input costs moving into spring, but what comes next? After several weeks of rising commodity pricing, many producers are asking when is the right time to market, and where is the top? With over a decade of business under our belt and the help of buyer insights and industry connections, Agfinity is still struggling to give you a straight answer!

While we don’t have a golden ticket, our team put together several tips that we hope will help you navigate another volatile year for commodity pricing and make the most of your grain marketing this spring!

Identify your “marketing personality”

Firstly, mental resiliency is very important when trying to keep sane in these markets. As a producer, it is important to know how you behave when marketing. For some, over-analyzing may lead you to leave great opportunities on the table in hopes of something better, while others may rush in to accept an opportunity without properly considering the implications. It is not a matter of better or worse, but rather about knowing; If we know our marketing tendencies and are aware of them at the time of decision making, it can help us become aware of when our own emotions are working against us.

Don’t fixate on the grain you’ve already sold

Like buying or selling shares of a stock, marketing grain is emotional and can sometimes be stressful. As it has been said before, we tend to focus on the 10,000 bushels sold yesterday rather than the 90,000 left to sell. Fixating on past decisions doesn’t make anybody any happier, and it clouds our judgement when trying to make clear decisions for the future.

Plan out your Farms approach

An uncertain future can give us quite the headache when it comes time to make a marketing decision. Therefore identifying our marketing personality and looking past old contracts can help us get past the stress and get to making money. Our final tip encourages you to check back on your schedule, remaining inventory, and your farms bottom line to update and solidify a plan for this year. Don’t hesitate to reach out and discuss your inventory and come up with a marketing strategy with one of our traders to determine how to make the most for your farm.

Buyer Brief – by Joseph Billett

Looming strike from Canadian Pacific Railway, there was a tentative walk off scheduled for immediately after midnight on March 16. As of my writing this on March 16th a strike hasn’t been announced but a strike is still looming. Fertilizer Canada which represents manufactures, wholesale and retail distributors of fertilizers warned that a s rail strike could result in fertilizer production facilities being forced to shut-in production, a situation that would be “crippling “to farmers’ crucial spring seeding season. “The agriculture sector is already experiencing supply challenges compounded by the war in Ukraine and cannot withstand any more disruption to the supply chain,” said fertilizer Canada president regarding a possible rail strike.

On that note uncertainty about the situation in Ukraine has the markets yo-yoing (yes, it’s a word, I checked). Following news of ceasefire talks, wheat markets have dropped. Futures are limit down across all wheat classes, regardless of the talks producing any resolution. Indicating again how volatile the markets currently are.

Domestically feed prices are teetering at all-time highs, buyers are quickly getting coverage for April – May. This rally and timeframe are what many sellers have been waiting for, however many bullish sellers are hesitant to sell until the market highs are certain. Unfortunately, the only way to be certain of a high point in the market is through the rear-view mirror.

Many sellers are taking advantage of strong new crop prices. New Crop barley is trading between $335.90/MT ($7.31/bu) – $369.90/MT ($8.05/bu) for September – December throughout Alberta and Saskatchewan please check our new Trade History | Agfinity Inc. to see what has traded in your area and to inquire on pricing. Many buyers are bidding aggressively on off spec grain as well and sellers are opening bins that have been shut for multiple seasons.
