Communicating through the Chaos

By April 28, 2022Blog

As we continue to navigate the uncertainty of global and domestic markets, avian flu, adverse weather conditions, and global conflict, Agfinity wanted to cool things down and make a brief mention of some positives. One of our main positives, as Joseph touched on last week, is that Agfinity has a great team and community. Our traders, buyer relation reps, and customer experience team work seamlessly in the day to day, allowing us to navigate whatever obstacles are thrown our way. We are incredibly proud of how our community of buyers, producers, and truckers have navigated these past few years by engaging in trusted and open communication.

On the topic of communication, our next positive applies to both our personal and professional lives. While we are all aware the threat of Covid is not over, limited restrictions have allowed us to see the light at the end of the tunnel. A few weeks ago, I was able to catch a concert at the newly renovated Massey Hall in Toronto. Standing in the balcony, looking at a stage that has been played by countless of Canada’s top musicians, I couldn’t help but smile. Not only was it the famous stage I was looking at that brought my smile (which already had me like a kid in a candy store), but also just being around people.

This past year was a good reminder that we are social beings who need each other, especially when the world is going crazy. If you and your farm are discussing the market and are unsure of the best way forward, you are not alone! Let’s keep up the open discussion and be there for each other as we continue to plow into the future of Agriculture. Navigating the ups and the downs together, we continue to contribute to the resiliency of our food system and efficiency of our processes both at Agfinity and in the Ag Industry as a whole.

Buyer Brief – by Sandra Correia-Letendre

The month of April is almost at a close and boy was the market active.  We saw #1 Canola, Barley, and Wheat rally.  Again, hitting record highs, both for Old Crop and New Crop.  Seeding has begun for the majority of southern Alberta with the remainder of Alberta eventually following suit.  With last years drought, it has been a slow start for New Crop offers coming to the market.

Barley prices are still on an uptick as of late, hitting $450/mt delivered Lethbridge for May/June.  With high Corn prices at approximately $480/mt delivered Lethbridge for June, Barley is now back in business.  How long will it last?  … as demand seems tight out there.  With New Crop Barley, many feedlots are wanting to wait to see what happens to prices after seeding before they jump on buying more.

Wheat prices continue to climb.  There is approximately $1/bu difference between gradable wheat and feed wheat prices.  Gradable wheat demand is in large part due exports increasing due to the War between Russia and the Ukraine.  According to StatsCan report released on Tuesday, Canadian farmers intend to plant more wheat and less canola in 2022. As stated in Western Producer April 26, “An anticipated increase in area for wheat is likely attributable to strong prices and high worldwide demand,” said Statistics Canada.

Canola is on fire! Sellers are bullish and GPO’s are getting hit for targets that were unimaginable last year.  It is said that these are the highest prices for New Crop Canola on record.  The challenge has been finding buyers who can still do quick movement. Many crushers and Line companies are covered until June/July.

Sellers Tip: Have you ever set a GPO before?  With the way the market is so volatile lately, this may be a good alternative to meet your target price.  Call us at 1-888-969-5552 to discuss.
