As I read the latest Stats Can report, watch the news, fill up my truck, or buy a brisket for the smoker it’s hard not to have a scarcity mindset. What is a scarcity mindset you ask, it’s when I’m so obsessed with the lack of something, usually time or money? That I can’t seem to focus on anything else, no matter how hard I try. How many times have you gotten an amazing price for your wheat or canola, and you can’t wait to share the price you locked in with your buddies? Only for them to state matter of factly that they just received a higher price for the same timeframe. How did that change your mood? Does their better price now make what you thought was a great price bad or did you get taken advantage of? Instead of practicing an abundance mindset, why do we tend to focus on the negative aspects of a situation or experience? I get it and fall into the potholes of a scarcity mindset instead of focusing on gratitude and abundance, the human brain is wired that way.
Unfortunately, our minds are not designed to make us happy, it’s designed to help us survive. It is always looking for what could hurt you, and it magnifies the bad. We are wired to operate out of a place of scarcity and fear. However, we do have a choice of what to focus on. We can learn to develop an abundance mindset.
Now what is an abundance mindset? I’m so glad you asked. An abundance mindset is to believe there are enough resources to go around. In other words, in taking a risk, by being positive and optimistic. The belief that there is more than enough for everyone. With a focus on an abundance mindset, we have peace in the present moment regardless of the circumstance. The biggest challenge that I have is, not living in a state of fear, and daily experiencing the benefits of gratitude which helps me to make better decisions and plans. When we are grateful, fear subsides, and an abundance mindset can grow.
What are some of the ways that we can know if we have an abundance mindset? It’s not very often that I think about what my mindset is. I’ve held myself back many times by dwelling on negativity without even realizing. Here are 3 things that I do that help me know if I have an attitude of gratitude and abundance.
- Celebrate other’s successes – An abundance mindset is the opposite of jealousy and fear. I try to believe that others’ successes don’t detract from my own. I genuinely celebrate the success of others who achieve their goals.
- Give back – I have found that when I’m in a scarcity mindset I dwell on myself and what I think I have lost or don’t have because I think someone took it. When I give of my time, energy, or skills, or simply pay it forward to family, friends, and strangers it helps me be appreciative of what I have and that changes my mindset.
- Live in the present – When I focus on gratitude and abundance, I’m not worried about the future or dwelling on the past. I try to remember that the only thing that is guaranteed is the present, and I focus on taking it all in.
I know this is another one of my fluffy articles, but this has really helped me in my life and business. Even as a team at Agfinity it is ingrained into the way we talk to our customers and each other, and it helps keep our culture and relationships positive and abundant. Try it on for a few weeks and see how it feels.

This week The Western Producer Reports, As of May 3, Alberta Agriculture found seeding ahead of the five-year average but slightly behind last year. Saskatchewan is lagging but seeing decent soil conditions in parts of Saskatchewan, particularly the East. Many buyers are talking more about New Crop now. This is indeed the case as August is quickly approaching. The markets are starting to quiet down, which does happen this time of year, as most buyers have bought enough to carry them through to the new crop harvest.
For months now buyers have seen bullish market prices that sellers are asking due to market speculation. This seems to be causing a large spread between the sellers asking price and what the buyers are offering. Which leaves the seller, who is not in a hurry to move his crop, with a decision. Whether to hold on to old crop and wait to see if buyers will come up in price to a level that the seller is willing to pull the trigger before the new crop harvest or to hold on to old crop into the new harvest year. Prices today are currently remaining at all-time highs.
In the world Ukraine shipped almost 1 million metric tons of wheat in April, despite the current siege by Russia. They have been exporting wheat through Romania and Poland since the normal seaport terminals are not operational. Although there is damage to the infrastructure at the seaport terminals, it is expected that the terminals could be up and running quickly in the event of a cease fire allowing more wheat into the world market.
