One of the cool things about working at Agfinity is our desire to learn and get better at what we do. And believe me, there is always something to learn about farming and grain trading! Although I am not a grain trader, I have a keen interest in learning about the agriculture industry and how we can better serve our customers through better relationships, higher efficiency, and awesome software.
Book Club
For the last few months, our team has been reading Dale Carnegie’s book “How to win friends & influence people”. So, every Friday at lunch (book club), we discuss what we have learned and how we can apply it to our day to day lives.
About the Book
You have probably heard or at least seen this book at the airport or bookstore. From the title, you might think it is a book about how to be more popular and get more friends. But really, it is more about finding ways to be more successful in our interpersonal communication – whether you are trying to sell something, work cooperatively with our colleagues, or resolve personal matters.
Written in 1936, this book is still a strong seller and has inspired many other books & training programs to help salespeople be more successful. Although some of the stories in the book seem a bit dated, you can still apply many of the important principles to today’s world.
Lessons Learned
Here are a couple of important themes from the book that I have embraced:
Before you speak, put yourself in the other persons shoes
This is probably the most important theme in the book. Through various stories and research, Dale helps break down what the other person wants out of a conversation. My personal motto “always treat people with respect” is similar and also many religions tell us to “treat others how you want to be treated”. In short, take time to think about what the other person wants to hear to put yourself in a more promising situation.Listen carefully…
We all know that listening is important, but I find we rarely do it well. Often, we interrupt others and we are too desperate to get out what we want to say. Instead, demonstrate you are actively listening by having good eye contact and responding in a way to show you heard what they said. Letting the other person speak will allow them to feel important.Put aside your ego and focus on the resolution
It is easy to react emotionally, especially if you feel you are in the right or feel disrespected. However, when we are communicating, we have an end goal in mind. Therefore, it is best to put aside your ego and engineer your words to achieve your goal. For example, you might want to bombard your “opponent” with facts about how you are right, but that will not leave the other person feeling good. Instead, focus on communicating the facts in a respectful manner and how a resolution will be beneficial to both parties.
Closing Words
As I get older (and wiser I hope), I have discovered that the more I learn, the more I realize how complex the world is and how much I do not know. It is very easy to believe that you have easy answers to all of society’s problems. However, after learning about grain trading and farming for the last 3 years, I realize that EVERY industry has its own complexities with a vast depth of knowledge that will humble you quickly.
Here at Agfinity, we continually strive to be better in everything we do. And yes, we do want to win you as a friend through excellent grain trading experiences!

Market Report – by Erin Harakal
Barley: Barley pricing has been hot! We have barley jump from $200mt to $225/mt delivered into the Lethbridge area for October movement. This price is being supported by the lack of selling right now. Despite having larger barley crops Calgary south some areas are just getting started on combining.
Wheat: Milling wheat has been staying firm as we get into new crop. Hard Red Spring #1 13.5% protein bids have been seen around $6.50/bu delivered in some parts of Alberta for October delivery. StatsCan showed an increase in wheat stocks for 2020 crop year. There seems to be a slight increase year over year. Feed wheat remains down with new crop barley coming off Alberta and other parts of Western Canada. If an early frost happens it may impact late maturing wheat crops. Parts of the prairies have started to see a frost, but it is hard to tell the extent of the damage.
Oats: Milling Oats have been as high as $3.30/bushel delivered in central Alberta for October delivery. Australia has been absent from the oat market over the last few years as they focused on smaller crops. But this could change this year as their amount of tonnes is estimated to be at 1.66 million tonnes. This is a huge increase from previous years. This may allow Australia to become a larger player in the oat market this year.
Peas: Yellow and green peas have started to slowly exit harvest season lows. Right now, as new crop yellow peas can be seen at $7.00/bushel delivered within central Alberta for October movement. Green peas have been staying firm at $8.00/bushel delivered in central Alberta for October movement. At the start of September StatsCan released their stock estimates and yellow peas ending stocks have become tighter than previous years where as green peas stocks are look about average.
Canola: Canola pricing has seemed to stay well supported by weakness in the US dollar and the rebound of vegetable oil and soy oil. We are currently seeing Canola pricing as high as $11.30/bu for November and even higher the later out you go. The canola market remains bullish with the talks of lower yields this year.
Thank you Annie Christiansen for this great photo!
Buyer Brief – by Kyler Tluchak
With temperatures dropping, leaves changing, and that feeling white stuff is all but around the corner—it’s hard to believe September is already half over. We have seen the market come back to life as fall harvest of 2020 has kicked off. Crop reports show much of the south is well ahead and central/northern parts of Alberta are slowly getting underway. Seeing prices come up significantly from where they were in August, the market looks to bounce back from a few quieter prior weeks.
Feed barley prices have risen sharply compared to August as we have seen the 2020 fall crop now coming off in much of Alberta and parts of Saskatchewan. In central parts of Alberta, feed barley prices are hovering around $200/MT picked up with recent trades. In the east near Provost County, loads are fetching $205/MT as well as in Red Deer and central for higher tonnage. Lethbridge delivered prices continue to rise as reports of $220/MT-$225/MT reflect a much more active market than in past weeks.
Wheat continues to be a quiet item in the market as we are seeing a shift back to feedbarley with increased availability and decreased feed wheat levels. Graded wheat has started to come in slowly but will be a bigger factor in the coming weeks as most of central AB harvest still is underway. Feed wheat prices picked up for central AB seeing $198/MT and moving south as high as $215 delivered Lethbridge.
Fall oats and pulses have begun also to make their way into the market as feed grade continues to move with prices in the Mackenzie and Grande Prairie area seeing $2.00-2.15/BU and peas around $5.50-5.70/BU and increase as you head central and farther south.
With harvest 2020 well underway, the coming weeks will be a busy and exciting time as buyers and producers alike will be keeping an eye on the markets to see where the opportunities will present themselves. Here is to a successful and bountiful fall harvest.
