With the cold weather last week, I found myself looking for an escape. We were busy calving at home and checking cows in -40 was really making me hope for warmer weather. In my free time I found myself looking into trips to warmer places because anywhere was better than the cold. As I got looking at the different trip sites, I started to see a pattern. They try to sell you on a cheap trip and a great experience. After doing some digging into the different packages you realize you either get one or the other and you can’t get the best of both worlds through the different booking sites. Looking at all the sites has left me feeling lost and like I should maybe bring in the professionals to help me, especially someone who has traveled to the place and can give me their honest opinion.
That’s the same with moving your grain. Sometimes you can’t get everything you want in one transaction, especially when you rely on one source for your information. In order to find the best opportunity, you need to look around and discover your different options. Barley: Over the past two weeks, we have seen feed barley bids quietly roll higher. Bids were up $0.05-$0.10/bushel or $2.50-$5/mt. This bump was largely due to increased demand from the very cold snap and some buyers needing to buy to meet their quotas. Buyers are currently well positioned for Feb-March and focus beginning to shift to April-May. April May prices are around $235-$240/mt delivered into Feedlot Alley. On an international export front demand is negligible for Canadian feed barley.
Wheat: Feed wheat prices tagged along with barley and made small gains. Barley remains the feed of choice, with many producers still holding out for feed wheat much higher than the market is providing at the moment. Many are trying to blend it with higher quality wheat. If it is going to go as feed now may be a good time to lock in movement as there is lots of wheat still in the field that will enter the feed market later this year. Milling wheat and durum has been trading sideways. The markets are still trying to wrap their heads around the implications of the signing of the phase 1 trade deal.
Peas: Both yellow and green peas prices remain unchanged. With many bids at $7.00 and $12.00 respectively these are even whole numbers that buyers are able to buy at. When in a pinch there have been short spurts of buying up to a dime higher.
Oats: Oat prices have been flat with buyer’s still looking to push the delivery time frame to the spring and summer. Over $3.00 on farm available for most of the province with prices as high as $3.25 for summer delivery. Feed oats still have ample demand with buyer’s paying more for heavy dry oats.
Canola: The big news in the Canola markets comes from the Malaysian palm oil markets. India has hal
ted all imports of palm oil from Malaysia (the world’s second biggest producer) due to the Malaysian government criticizing India for domestic issues. Sound familiar to anyone? While this initially provided support to other oil seeds that has switched and dragged down the entire oil seed market. At the time of writing March Canola futures opened at $481 and is currently trading at $479/mt. The past month’s performance can be seen below courtesy of www.barchart.com

Happy New Year! Hope everyone enjoyed the holiday season and is ready to get back at it.
The couple weeks of the holidays were quiet. It did, however, seem like buyers were more active than sellers. So far this week, we have seen a shift in the market. Demand seems to have increased for Jan-Mar and sellers willing to start selling and at more tonnage. Pricing, however, for feed grains have remained pretty flat with Barley $227/mt-$230/mt delivered Lethbridge. We have had some feedlots looking for some quick movement and, therefore, are willing to pay more. The challenge has been finding trucking at reasonable rates.
My position this week on the market is neutral. Buyers in general are not in any dire need so they are not willing to take grain at any price, but they are still bidding. There is still a lot of grain out there and not much of it moved last month so we may see the market come down shortly as farmers need to sell.
On a separate note, the big news this year so far is the US assassination of Iranian General, Qassem Soleimani. How will this affect us this year? We hope and pray that the US soldiers out there keep safe and that this doesn’t create some crazy war.
Seller’s Tip: Please keep in mind, regardless of today’s weather, spring is a few months away. If you need to sell before than it’s a good time to figure out when you need to market that grain, so it moves by end of March. Especially if you have high moisture grain, you don’t want to hold on to it very long and take the chance for the moisture to increase.
