My Perspective on the Farming Industry, From a Tech Worker

One of the great things about the agriculture industry is that I am always learning, and there is always something new to explore or get better at. Growing up in Fort McMurray (oil city), I was not familiar with the inner workings of farming, so coming to work for Agfinity was quite the knowledge curve!

With recent world events (COVID) and attending the Farm Tech Conference a few months ago, I want to share with you a few insights from a perspective of someone new to the farming world.

My Background

But first, a little bit about me. I grew up in Fort McMurray, a small city of about 80,000 people in northern Alberta. Fort Mac is world famous for their billion of barrels of oil that powers much of the Alberta economy. My dad worked at the oilsands plant for his entire career and my brother still works in the mine. I also worked a few summers at Syncrude/Shell plants.

(Photos: Working at the Albian Sands (Shell) plant in Fort McMurray 2004)

Farming is not talked about and I had no idea that there were different kinds of wheat (i.e. HRS vs. SWS) or that commodity prices changed so frequently. I suppose I had a simplified view of how farming works and did not think much of it. I assumed farmers grew their crops each year (with ease) and had simple reliable ways of getting it to the market.

Fast forward many years, I attained a computer science degree and started building websites for various businesses and industries. Being a software developer, I have to understand how my clients operate and what their needs are. Essentially, I need to understand their business well enough in order to write code to achieve what they want. So, in the fall of 2017, I started learning the ins and out of Agfinity and the farming industry in general.

Here are some of the things I have learned over the past 3 years:

    • Farmers are good hard-working people
Perhaps I am a little biased here, but I have come to realize that farmers are super friendly/ down to earth people. Whenever they come to our office, they come with a genuine friendly attitude and no sign of any ego. Also, farmers are faced with numerous challenges throughout the year and will work whatever hours it takes to get their crops to market.
    • Market Volatility
I had no idea that prices for grain changes so frequently! So many factors go into why grain pricing changes and although I am not a grain broker, I am still trying to wrap my head around it. Weather, supply & demand, world events, politics, transport all play major factors into why grain changes daily.
    • Grain Quality and Specifications
Grain quality is probably the most complex facet of farming that I was unaware of. There is a huge field of science that goes into breaking down the quality of grain (i.e., moisture, ergot, protein etc.)
    • Movement Logistics
Getting grain from the farm to the feed lot or to manufacturing is not as easy as it looks. Road bans, wet fields, freight prices, and trucker availabilities are just some of challenges.
    • Embrace Technology
In January, I attended the FarmTech Conference for the first time. I was in awe in how much technology played a role in the farming industry. The farming industry is always evolving, and farmers continue to take advantage of new efficiencies and technologies to stay competitive.

  • Do not fear change, rather take advantage of it
Change can be uncomfortable and scary, I get it. However, in this ever-changing world, we know we must adapt in order to survive. So rather than try to fight change or dwell upon it, try seeing change as an opportunity that you can take advantage of. Here at Agfinity, I am always impressed with our staff’s ability to solve problems for our clients. Farmers are faced with numerous challenges each year too and have no choice but to find ways to make things work.

Final Thoughts

After working in agriculture for the past 3-4 years, I recognize that I enjoy the complexity and challenges that come with the industry. I still have lots of learning to do! But I enjoy interacting with my fellow Agfinity colleagues and farmers/buyers as well to continue developing my knowledge of farming.

It is obvious that we will continue to face challenges, however I know we will rise above them together. Whether it is grain pricing data or logistics challenges, don’t be afraid to give us a call at 1-888-969-5552. Farming is forever!

Market Report – by Nelson Neumann

Barley: The feed barley market has been coming off with prices currently trading $228-$232/mt into Feedlot Alley in southern Alberta. The weather has warmed up and we are seeing spring threshed grain become available and sellers able to access their yards. Outlook on feed grains is bearish heading into summer. On new crop barley prices have been seen as low as $200/mt into Lethbridge.

Peas: Pea prices have stabilized after recovering recently. Yellow pea bids are heard at $7.75-$8.00/bushel delivered Central Alberta with Green Peas around $12/bushel. For new crop prices lots is depending on the May 7th Stats can acreage report. Acres were down significantly in 2019 over 2018 and are expected to increase for 2020.

Wheat: Canadian Durum prices have made some gains. Turkey has emerged as a export market and prices in southern Alberta have reached $8.00 delivered in some locations. Milling wheat has traded sideways with lots of uncertainty coming out of the Black Sea Region. Feed wheat bids has softened slightly but not as much as feed barley. Bids around $230/mt into southern Alberta.

Canola: Canola has been remained steady recently. There is some price support coming from concerns on spring seeding being delayed as well as strong demand. The Canadian dollar has been recovering dampening some of the canola gains.

Oats: Oat bids remain sporadic with many buyers adequately covered into new crop. Opportunities that pop up may be wise to lock in. Prices remain close to $3.00 FOB farm across much of the oat growing region.

Thank you Cheryl Morse for this great photo!

Buyer Brief – by Sandra Correia-Letendre

It’s so refreshing to see the weather warming up. The yards are getting softer and so is the market for Feed Barley and Feed Wheat in particular. Feed Barley has been trading this week at $228-$232/mt delivered Lethbridge for May/June. Feed Wheat is at $230-$231/mt delivered Lethbridge for May/June. Buyers seem to be starting to focus on New Crop, the market has softened as well. Currently we are seeing the market at about a $200/mt delivered Lethbridge for New Crop Barley Sept/Oct which is about $10/mt down to a couple weeks ago.

We have been hearing that southern Alberta is out combining. Spring Thrashed should be coming in droves to the market soon. Buyers have pulled back their bids as a lot of grain came to the market this week and knowing more spring thrashed is coming (which is less expensive to purchase over feed barley or feed wheat). Seeding has also started; seeders are not far behind combines.

Cattle prices came up a little bit yesterday but over all they are still down heavily. Feedlots seem to be more reserved with feed purchases, again they are still feeding hand to mouth. With the cattle market being so low, buyers are finding barley prices high to feed so they are often switching their rations as much as up to 50%. Corn is coming into Lethbridge now and still may be the alternative to barley if corn prices continue to drop.

Seller’s Tip: Friendly reminder, if you have contracted grain to move in May/June, please make sure your able to load while seeding. Let us help you market your grain, 1-888-969-5552.
