Safety on the Farm

By March 24, 2021Blog

Warm weather and low snowfall has brought on spring a lot quicker than most years across the prairies. Even reports of some scattered seeding starting in AB, SK and MB have begun to trickle in. For the majority of farmers planting will begin sometime in the next 3-5weeks. This is always a busy and hectic time of year and unfortunately safety is often put on the back burner and is not on the top of mind. That is why it is important to use this time before things get busy to review your farms safety program. Here are some things to keep in mind and that may help with your farm’s safety practices.

Whether you have new or returning employees, proper training is crucial when it comes to farm safety. This includes unpaid employees such as family members. Even a long tenured and experienced worker may be asked to perform a job that they have never done before. It is also important to review jobs and tasks that have been done in the past. Having a refresher can help eliminate complacency and be a good reminder of all potential hazards. Reviewing procedures can also provide opportunity for improvement and identifying new hazards not realized before. This may allow you to develop a safer and more efficient way of completing the task.

There is no doubt seeding is one of the busiest times on most farms. Some years are worse as spring weather conditions can make the window tighter and more stressful.  Worker fatigue becomes a huge concern at this time of year and is something that must be top of mind for not only yourself but employees as well. Proper sleep and nutrition can be difficult to achieve during this time but is important in fatigue management. Having multiple people properly trained and competent to perform different tasks allows for shifts/breaks and allows one worker not to have to do the same thing all day, all spring. Even jumping off the drill and into the sprayer for a few hours breaks up the day/week and breaks complacency.  Another thing that helps is when running equipment get out and stretch your legs every so often. This also gives you a chance to look over the equipment and if operating drill this is also a great time to check seeding depth!

Many people hear farm safety and think that it needs to be an official “safety program” that consists of binders of paperwork and costs a large amount of money to establish and maintain. Whether you have multiple paid employees, farm with family, or farm by yourself safety is a mindset. Please keep it at the top of your mind this spring.

From everyone at Agfinity, have a safe seeding season!
