Why They Don’t Trade Onion Futures

We are all trying to make sense of our rapidly changing post Covid-19 world and one of the trickier aspects is what exactly is going on in the stock market. After the sharpest drop since 1929 and the great depression the equity markets have been steam rolling higher to 5% off the all-time high despite record unemployment and dismal economic projections. This departure from fundamentals has some crying manipulation, accusing insider trading between policy makers, federal reserve, and institutional investors. In all this noise I came across an account of market manipulation in 1955 in the agricultural markets.

What is now the modern-day stock market has its roots in the Chicago Board of Trade established in 1848. This was a trading pit to buy and sell agricultural commodities primarily wheat and corn. In less than a decade after being listed in the 1940’s onion futures contracts was the most traded product. Then in 1955 is when the manipulation began. Two traders/farmers concocted a get rich quick scheme to short the market.

Shorting the market is when you take a position that the price will decrease. These two traders accumulated 98% of onion contracts, and ended up receiving over 14,000mt of onions to fulfill these contracts. What does one do with all those onions? These traders used their vast supply to artificially control the price, strong arming other growers into purchasing at their artificial price or else they would liquidate their storage flooding the market dropping the price. The two traders planned however, to do exactly that and loaded up on short positions.

What makes onions different is that they are perishable and cannot last in storage. They needed to be taken out and cleaned and sold eventually. When the stockpiles were sold this triggered an immense crash in prices dropping from $2.75 to $0.10 per bag, a staggering drop of 96%! At the lowest point, the bags used to carry them were worth more then the onions themselves. This sudden drop played perfectly in the trader’s short positions netting them millions in profits.

This of course was devastating to other onion growers with many of them having to pay to dispose of their now worthless bounty. The American government launched an investigation into the matter and unfortunately found no illegality with the traders actions but did deem that the perishable nature of onions prevented them from being able to be defined as a Commodity and the Onion Futures Act was passed banning future contracts. Other perishable goods are still able to be traded such as proteins.

The removal of this financial tool despite preventing a similar occurrence from occurring has increased volatility in the price and reduced liquidity with farmers and traders alike frequently lobbying for a reinstatement. It went all the way to the supreme court, but the ban stood, and to this day it is why you are unable to buy and sell onion futures.

We don’t trade onion futures, but we can help you meet you current and future grain marketing needs. Give us a call at 1-888-969-5552.

Market Report – by Joseph Billett

The loonie has made solid gains over the past few trading sessions, thanks to rising oil prices and a weakening USD. Technically, the CDN dollar is overbought. The September CDN now has support at 72.75 cents with next support seen at 72.25 cents USD.

Corn plantings in the U.S. are now 97% complete vs the past five-year average of 93% complete for this time of year. The corn crop is now rated 75% good-to-excellent (GTE). Soybean plantings are now 86% complete vs the past five-year average of 79%. Overall, U.S. soybean crop health is improving and now rated 72% GTE, up 2% from a week ago.

Since bottoming out six weeks ago, U.S. ethanol production hit 837,000 barrels last week. Although this is still significantly lower than the 1,057,000 barrel average, this year prior to the pandemic, production has now recovered close to two thirds of the drop due to lost demand. Ethanol stocks declined this week, despite the increased production. All of this adds up to increased demand for corn in the coming weeks as the U.S. economy continues to move back to more normal levels.

The average price of feed barley for 2020‑21 is expected to drop from 2019‑20 due to increased domestic supply. To pile on, large corn supplies around the world will restrict feed grain prices. World barley production for 2020‑21 is expected to decrease slightly but supplies are expected to be plenty due to higher carry in stocks, according to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Total use is anticipated to rise but will be limited by ample corn supplies. Carry‑out stocks are expected to increase. World trade volume for barley is expected to reduce as cheap corn will be used as a replacement for some feed barley.

Canola: Although lower than March, StatsCan reported another good month of canola exports in April at 1.083 million tonnes. There were no single buyers that stood out, but rather solid volumes across several nations. Chinese was back to their average of 160,830 tonnes, compared to the unexpectedly large number the previous month. The year-to-date total of 7.34 million tonnes is above the 6.93 million tonnes exported last year. Weekly CGC data suggests that May might not quite hit the April total, but still be ahead of the pace needed to reach our target of 9.65 million tonnes for the. Of interest is the contrast in the timing of shipments between the two seasons, with 2018/19 seeing a surge in fall before dropping sharply, while this year got off to a sluggish start before cranking up in recent months.

Buyer Brief – by Sandra Correia-Letendre

The market for feed Barley and wheat has been strong. We saw a mini rally last week and continue to see it stabilize so far this week. Barley has jumped to $240-$243/mt delivered Lethbridge for June/July, which is almost $10/mt over my last report 2 weeks ago. Feed Wheat is hovering around $238/mt delivered Lethbridge. We are still finding that feedlots are needing these last-minute loads to keep them going as they slowly sell off their cattle.

Barley is now getting high enough in price to make sense to bring in corn to southern Alberta from the US. Spring threshed corn is coming out of North Dakota and landing in southern Alberta at about a $225/mt. This will give Barley a run for its money. Buyers, especially in southern Alberta, may shift some of their buys to corn and therefore putting pressure on the barley market to come down in price. New crop barley may see some competitive prices come fall with talks that China may be importing our barley to produce beer.

Spring threshed has definitely come to the market! It is probably making up close to half our traders the last couple weeks. Spring Threshed barley and wheat are coming in approximately $5/mt lower than old crop for June/July. We still feel there is more out there and are seeing strong demand from buyers.

Milling Oats has also been in high in demand. We have seen prices at $4/bu or slightly higher delivered central Alberta. So far this week we are seeing this continue.

Seller’s tip: Oats demand has really increased. If your sitting on any milling quality oats this may be your time to sell. Call us at 1-888-969-5552.
