One of the many things that I love about the Ag industry is that a high percentage of the people that I talk to are entrepreneurs. From feed lot owners to grain companies, truckers, and farmers. Many of them are owners of their small business. To me this is a very cool thing, and it allows me to talk about more entrepreneurial topics. Our organization has been working remotely since March 2020 due to Covid and as of February 2022 we no longer have an office and have committed for the time being to be 100% remote. During the past 2 years we’ve needed to hire team members remotely for the Agfinity Team. We have Patrick and Bryce that are out of Ontario, Meg who just joined us is in Manitoba and the rest of our team in is Alberta mostly around the Edmonton area. Hiring remotely has opened many doors as well as created a few challenges that we have had to overcome, for instance time zones, good internet, cats walking in front of webcams, and dogs barking in the background. But as team members stress about these things at first, they realize very quickly that the customer that they are talking to is dealing with the exact same challenges. Working remotely is not for everyone, neither is agriculture, and in our business, sales isn’t for everyone either. We have seen turnover because of some of these things along with others and so when we hire new team members and coach current team members, we focus on having the Right People in the Right Seats.
What does Right People, Right Seats mean? I’m glad you asked, this statement is from some a system that we use called EOS (Entrepreneurial Operating System). This system has six components vision, data, process, traction, issues, and people. Today I’m writing on the people component which focuses on having the right people in the right seat. “The Right People are the ones who just fit. You know them when you see them; you feel it. They are people you like to work with, people who, like you, want to accomplish something every day. They sacrifice so the team can win. They act according to a code of behavior: your company’s Core Values. These are the Right People” excerpt from What the Heck Is EOS by Gino Wickman. Our team at Agfinity works more closely together now that we are remote and using this principle now than when we were all in the same office in a trading pit. Because we have the Right People in the Right Seats. We work through problems in a timely manner with better service for you, our customer.
There are four scenarios that we have encountered at Agfinity and I’m sure you have in your organizations as well.
1. Wrong Person – Wrong Seat
2. Right Person – Wrong Seat
3. Wrong Person – Right Seat
4. Right Person – Right Seat
We have many examples of all these scenarios in Agfinity and I’m sure a few examples come to mind to you as well from over the years. I share this because it takes a lot of hard work and great processes to build a strong and successful team, and that’s what we have and are building to serve you. We are looking for progress not perfection on our journey and we are so grateful to be part of this industry with you.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine is now entering its eighth week, starting February 24th. Every Day our thoughts and prayers are with the unimaginable suffering of the citizens of Ukraine.
That being said, the grain markets continue around the world and here in North America. Buyers are seeing two main factors creating volatility in the Grain Market: The first being the war; the second is the “increased influence of speculative investors on the price of Chicago wheat, which is contributing to the volatility in the wheat futures market”, said DTN lead analyst Todd Hultman, also resulting in volatile domestic grain prices.
Hultman went on to explain “Volatility is not going to be short term. It’s going to stay, and we’re going to probably deal with this all the way through harvest”. In the last few weeks buyers have already seen this as graded crop prices hit grain purchase orders (GPO’s), then soften, then hit again. Buyers were also hedging as prices were climbing but now not buying as much as demand for domestic grain begins to drop.
The prices before the war were already bullish coming off the worst North American grain harvest in 19 years. Market specialists say “we could very easily envision a drop in grain prices on a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia and prices can change on a dime if producers around the world harvest a good crop in 2022”.
