Market Report – by Nelson Neumann

Barley: Feed barley has strengthened substantially over the past two weeks. Prices have climbed into the mid 230’s/mt delivered into southern Alberta. This is increase is primarily due to a shortage of freight to deliver ample feed supplies. All last year American corn was being delivered by rail reducing the demand for carriers which led to some under employed operators to shut their doors. That in addition to lack of back hauls into Saskatchewan has caused freight rates to jump and buyers have increased their bid accordingly. There is talk of feed barley being delivered by rail car from southern Saskatchewan, although the CN rail strike dampers that possibility. To summarize: There is adequate feed barley supply although logistical challenges are acting as a bottleneck propelling the price upwards. The markets correct abnormalities and whether that’s barley by rail or more carriers coming on board there is plenty of downside in the market for 2020.

Wheat: Feed wheat is trading at an equal $/mt level as feed barley. Still lot’s of tough feed wheat in the market as high quality grain takes drying precedence. Milling wheat has been relatively sideways with Protein premiums still being quite strong. The CN strike poises a threat to domestic cash bids as disruptions can cause serious backlogs that reduce the need to buy.

Peas: Pulses across the prairies have been trending upwards lead by green peas. Green peas have shot up to as high as $10.75 delivered Central Alberta. The primary reason for this boost is quality concerns with bleaching testing higher then average. Yellow peas have tagged along for the ride with bids increasing $0.10/bushel.

Canola: Canola has seen ever so mild of an increase. The Canadian dollar has cooled off its recent high and at the time of writing is at $0.751 which is boosting export values. Demand for canola domestically is increased over last year as local crush margins have increased as well as the quantity used.

Oats: Steady oats have not seen a change in pricing. For milling oats most buyers are completely covered until February or March 2020. Feed oats are still seeing solid demand with much more moisture tolerance then other feed cereals.

The market is booming. As of yesterday, we continue to see feed grain prices go up. In our trades, Barley hit a high of $233/mt delivered Lethbridge for Nov/Dec. We are seeing a $3-$5 carry for Jan-March.

We continue to see prices being driven up due to prolonged harvest along with freight costs being high due to the high demand on trucks. The CN strike will not help this situation, especially for elevators. As a team, most of us feel bullish this week, due to these reasons above. We did have 1 bearish vote—are buyers almost covered and therefore will demand be low any day now. At some point soon trucking situation will resolve itself and we will probably see prices soften at that point. A few buyers I’ve talked to are also taking the bearish view.

In the last couple weeks, Farmers have finally been more willing to sell higher tonnage. This is partly due to prices being close to their targets now and they need cash flow. As of yesterday, buyers were still needing higher tonnage, so it’s still a good time for farmers to sell.
