Local Activities

By July 20, 2022Newsletter

Lately my girlfriend and I have been trying to get out a bit more and do some fun and different things on weekends that we don’t typically do, or just haven’t done in a long time. So, what sorts of fun things are there to do around? It depends where you are looking and, in this newsletter, we will be focusing on the Edmonton area.

One of the first fun things we did when we recently started searching for activities was going to the Royal Alberta Museum. Now depending on who you ask some may not consider that as much fun, but we had a really great time there. They have great exhibits, my favorite being the room with all the different insects and fish. It is fun trying to spot out some of the insects in their habitats since they are designed to blend into them, it can make it quite challenging! When we went, they also had a special section of the museum set up for that weekend which focused on historic vehicles and showed a bit of their evolution and it’s amazing to see how far some of those vehicles have come.

Another activity we did recently which was much different for us was going to a place called the Cat Café on Whyte. This café is home to several cats at any given time from a local rescue group known as SAFE TEAM (Saving Animals from Euthanasia Team). The way they support the cats who live there is by charging people an entry fee to come hang out in the café with the kitties for 1 hour, the fee also gets you unlimited drinks at the café while you are there, my favorite was the toffee coffee frappe! We had a great time giving the cats attention and trying out the different drinks, and if you feel like adopting one of the cats from your visit you will have to apply separately through the SAFE TEAM group and wait to hear your response.

This weekend we plan to go to an event called the Edmonton Nerd Sale! This event really captured my interest because it is a place to shop for video games for systems ranging from Atari to current generation, as well as different collectables which has my name written all over it. I plan to be there bright and early to try and catch any hidden gems there before they’re gone!

One of the next activities we plan to do when we have some time is go to the Edmonton Valley Zoo. Those are just some of the fun things we have been up to in the Edmonton Area, it seems there are quite a lot of fun things we can do around here when we just take a little look!

Buyer Brief – by Jenny Redshaw

The sun is shining, the crops are looking good (for the most part) and it feels like summer. Unfortunately, grain markets are not sharing the same positivity lately. Over the past week grain markets have continued their downward spiral that has now spanned multiple weeks. A large crop predicted by Statscan last week among other reasons has led to a downward trend across all grain commodities.

Wheat has taken the brunt of the hit, with global wheat markets dropping. This comes as wheat continues to come out of the black sea region and North American crops that are progressing. After reaching historic highs, we are now in the $10.50 fob range for CWRS.

Favorable crop conditions in Western Canada have been part of reason for the dive in canola prices, but we also got news last week of Malaysian palm oil export tariffs being removed, which also contributed to dips in the world vegetable oil markets. The silver lining to the dip in canola prices is the prospect of improved shipping as we head into new crop. For many months now, Canadian canola has been trading anywhere from 2 to 4 dollars per bushel higher than the markets in Europe and Australia. The dip in North American prices will make us more competitive on the world market by creating more movement opportunities across Western Canada.

Barley prices have also seen a steep dive, following corn prices in the United States. Some major corn growing regions in the United States teetering on the brink of drought. While prices haven’t responded so far, this could provide some support if rain doesn’t come soon.
