Wow . . . what a year this has been with no way to predict or anticipate it. Corona virus, now COVID did not care about what we did for a living or what our plans were for 2020, it was the epitome of a disruptor. We have all had to make sacrifices, some more than others many with older parents and all the anxiousness and fear that comes from thinking about their safety and health. Also, the struggle that has come from those of us that have kids in school and the constant challenge that this year has been. Our jobs, families and recreation have all been affected by this pandemic. Here at Agfinity we have tried our best to weather the storm with our culture and sanity intact. We have been working remotely since the middle of March and have only gotten together as a team a handful of times. We have onboarded more than ten team members remotely since March. In addition to doing a couple of days of intensive training in the office then the remainder happening remotely as we work from our homes. We have had to adapt and learn to pivot as we went. We are daily collaborating as a team to get it right.
I have written many times about my love for learning new things and being challenged and how important it is for me. Now I have been able to see how my boys deal with adapting and learning new things. In October we signed the boys Truett 8 and Samuel 7 up for Brazilian Jujitsu here in Spruce Grove. It’s been really nice that they are able to train together if they had gone alone they would have had to train with a dummy, the running joke in our house is that they are still training with a dummy but at least this one fights back. With the new restrictions that have come from the Alberta Government classes have gotten smaller and they have been doing more classes online. It is always amazing to me to see how well children adapt to change and challenging circumstances, I think that Covid has and will continue to create a new level of resilience in our children as well as us. Here in Spruce Grove Rodrigo Resendes Brazilian Jiu Jitsu school has done a great job of rolling with the pandemic.
The other thing that Truett and Samuel are learning this year is how to downhill ski. I realized, as much younger kids are flying by us on Saturday that I likely waited to long to teach them how to ski but here we are. It amazes me how different personalities take on new things and new challenges head on while others seem to have a myriad of excuses, along with people and circumstances to blame, as to why this just won’t work out. Fortunately, the boys had a fantastic first day of skiing at Rabbit Hill in Edmonton thanks to their big sister Hannah who is 14 and has gone skiing a few times before. Their old man was not much help on teaching them how to ski but just like them I’m learning and looking forward to getting better with them. By the end of the day they had both gone down the main hill, Truett couldn’t get enough of it and can’t wait to go back and Samuel was happy to come out alive but is still looking forward to the next trip.
Along with embracing new challenges and opportunities that come our way, I’ve found for myself that my perspective on these circumstances has been really important. Am I focusing on what I can’t do or what I’m now limited on doing right now or am I excited and thankful for what I am able to do regardless of the restrictions or awkwardness that may now be present. We have 5 new team members that joined Agfinity on Monday and are experiencing all of this firsthand as they give you a call and see if there is any pricing they can get for you and for buyers what your bids currently are. As we are being forced into new challenges and difficult circumstances will we only see the limitations or can we embrace the opportunity.

Market Report – by Wade Seville
Canola: Canola continues to have mixed emotions this week, seeing prices rally, decline, and rally again. Yesterday, we saw March futures contracts break above $580/MT and new crop November contracts breaking $525/MT. This strength comes despite recent weakness in the soybean markets, with January soybean contracts dropping close to $11.60/bu. Brazil also received a positive weather forecast, predicting 110-115% of normal amounts of precipitation in the upcoming weeks. This is expected to have a positive impact on Brazil’s soybean production – increasing the supply of soybeans on the international market and further contributing to a bearish sentiment. Today, ICE canola futures are down about $4 to $6/MT and Chicago soybeans are down another 8 cents and still showing signs of continued bearish price movement. Tomorrow is the anticipated Stats Canada principal crop report, analysts believe we will see a decline from the previous September canola estimate of 19.4MMT to 19MMT or lower. This uncertainty regarding the Canadian canola production has allowed canola to continue with its general bullish trend upwards for the time being.
Despite this information, it is important to note that the technical charts depict canola as being overbought around the $580/MT area. This signals that canola is vulnerable to a pullback from its current price levels. If a price drop were to occur, there are signs of significant support around the $560/MT area.
Wheat: Feed wheat prices have been the talk of the town this week, with bids up to $6.50/bu at the bin in western Saskatchewan and up to $7/bu in Alberta. At these prices, feed wheat is selling for a better price than a graded, high quality wheat is. If you have any wheat that is less than a #1 with high protein, consider selling into this hot market and give us a call today.
In general, wheat futures markets are struggling right now. Minneapolis spring wheat dropped 4 cents yesterday while winter wheats were trading 7 cents lower. This morning, winter wheats started off about 2 cents higher than yesterdays close, spring wheat futures are trading flat/mixed.
A new report published by the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics increased the projected Australian wheat production to 31.17MMT – the largest since 2016. Rumors begin to circulate that the Russian government will look to increase their wheat exports by 2.5MMT through Jan-Jun.
Corn (Feed Barley): March corn futures contracts started off hot this week, briefly hitting highs of $4.40/bu. Prices at these levels failed to establish buyer support, causing the futures contracts to retrace closer to $4.20/bu today. This price drop has caused a bearish key reversal on the technical charts, causing analysts to anticipate further decline in prices. March corn contracts show signs of support at $4.15/bu. Open interest on corn contracts has also declined. For the readers who are unaware; a high open interest means there are many contracts that are open and available, and participants are watching the market very closely. An increasing open interest indicates new and additional money flowing into the market (often compared to ‘stepping on the gas pedal’), and decreasing open interest indicates money is beginning to leave the market in search of greater returns.
*Feed barley and corn are highly correlated, meaning they typically follow the same price pattern. When trying to analyze feed barley prices, corn is typically the commodity to look at.

Well, it’s now December 1st- we’ve almost made it to the end of what is certainly a memorable year- that is 2020. With new COVID-19 restrictions imposed on Alberta and the majority of Canada until Christmas, here is to 2021 and hopefully a new beginning for all of us.
With the high price rally experienced weeks ago, we seem to have settled into a more stable market as of late. Barley trades have still been strong and bids/ sale prices seem to be leveling off. For last 2020 movements into DEC we are seeing trades still around $245-$250/MT FOB Edmonton area and increasing as we move out South-East. Movement into 2021 JAN/FEB/MAR still seeing prices creeping up past $255/MT FOB and increased as we move into spring. Heading south of the capital region as high as $258/MT- $265/MT FOB around Calgary south and down to Lethbridge DLVD prices maintaining a $270/MT-$275/MT DLVD for DEC. Movement into JAN-MAR still seeing highs around $275/MT+ DLVD.
Wheat continues to back barley at close second for trades in our market. Graded has maintained a quiet spot in the game as handful of #1 and #2 HRS wheat have been traded. Feed wheat continues to be strong specifically with HRS being the bulk of marketed grain we have seen. Recent trades in the North FOB have fetched $215/MT or $5.90/BU to out East central going for around $247/MT or $6.75/BU FOB out into the new year.
Feed oats and pulses continue to have little presence in our market with predominantly feed oats continuing to go for around +-$3.00/BU FOB and seeing #2CW’s leaving the bins as high as $3.55/BU FOB throughout central AB. Peas have all but been almost non-existent this fall as high moisture downgrades and local prices have kept any availability from making their way down south for buyers.
