I speak English, I promise.

By April 7, 2021Blog

I was reminded on the weekend, when I referred to the change in my wallet as “shrapnel”, that the English language is not necessarily universal. Words have different meanings in different countries, and sayings do not always translate. I thought I would share with you all some of my experiences, and the changes I have had to make, with how I speak since moving from Australia.

When I first came to North America, I was a summer camp counselor in the USA and oversaw the teenage girls. I credit them with helping me make one of my first adjustments. In Australia thongs are something you wear on your feet. While it is still something you wear over here, it is not commonly worn on the feet. There is nothing like working with teenage girls to help you start referring to them as flip flops real fast! At the first job I had in Canada I informed my boss that I would not be at work that day because I was “crook as a dog”. I had only been here a few months and did not realize that he would have no idea that it means “I’m really sick”.

I can usually tell when I am using a purely Australian term by the reactions I get. Like the look on my fiancés face when I told one of his kids to stop “carrying on like a pork chop” one day when they were being overly emotional about something. Or when he was literally rolling on the ground laughing when we came across an outside toilet and I asked him if you call it a “thunder box” over here.

Australians are notoriously lazy speakers who like to abbreviate everything, so using the actual words for things is something I have had to get used to. I no longer refer to the afternoon as “arvo”, a potato is no longer a “spud”, a sausage is not a “snag” and football is no longer “footy”. I have also removed all colloquialisms from my vocabulary. My whole life I knew that a builder is a “chippy”, a farmer is a “cocky” and you might hear a teacher referred to as a “chalky”. Not anymore.

So, if we are ever talking, just know that I am doing my best to speak Canadian English. If I say something that you do not understand please feel free to let me know. We can have a laugh together and I will add it to my ever-increasing list.
