Choosing Positivity: An Agricultural Scope

By October 20, 2021Blog

A year filled with record high prices, rough growing conditions, and low yields has left many producers and grain companies in less-than-ideal situations moving into the new year. Amongst greater complications surrounding the Covid-19 Pandemic, it has been a trying year for all to say the least.

During trying times, it is easy to get frustrated by things outside of our control. We all hang at the mercy of market swings, weather conditions, yields, etc., and all deal with some level of frustration and discontent surrounding unfortunate and sometimes difficult realities. However, it is important to tie our emotions to the things we can control.

Below, we offer a few tips and trips that can help us all maintain an optimistic outlook on the future.

First off, it is much easier to stay focused on those things in your control if you keep yourself busy. As we all know, in many situations thinking can only get you so far. There are plenty of opportunities to stay busy in a good way, including picking up a new hobby, setting new personal goals, making new friends, or taking some time to reach and learn about a new interest.

Secondly, no matter what situation we find ourselves in, it never hurts to take a moment to reflect on how we have been treating ourselves. There are many factors related to our health and well-being that play a crucial role in our day-to-day experiences, and they often get thrown to the side at times of hardship. These include things like regular exercise, practicing gratitude, and maintaining positive personal relationships outside of work. Ironically, the stressful and difficult times are when these little things are most important to maintaining a positive outlook on the future.

Finally, there always comes a time for thoughtful reflection and consideration of alternative solutions to the problems we have faced or are facing. In the Ag. industry, we have plenty of opportunities to improve our own operation. Considering our own farm or companies’ adaptability and resilience, including things like crop diversity, new technological applications, or new or alternative business relationships which may give us an edge in the future can keep us focused on the better days ahead.

At the end of the day, we will all find ourselves in situations where we are frustrated, at a loss, or unsatisfied. It is how we behave in the face of such adversity that defines us as people and businesses, and that is entirely in our control. Stay positive and let’s keep an eye on better days ahead!

Buyer Brief – by Sandra Correia-Letendre

As we make our way through the fall season, we get closer to harvest 2021 getting close to done.  With the northern areas in the late stages of harvest, we should see more grain still coming to the market the next few weeks.   Feed wheat, Barley and Feed Oats are still going strong.  Bids for these commodities seem to be slightly up this week so far.

Barley demand continues and prices are on the upswing these last few days.  We are still seeing strong bids for quick movement.  Some Sellers expectations for how quick they want loads moved and payment sent is challenging.  Not sure how long demand will last for quick movement with Corn coming around the corner.  Barley bids are currently as high as $410/mt delivered Lethbridge for movement October/November.  We are not seeing much for bids past December yet.

Corn on the other hand has been a little softer this last week.  We have been hearing trades around the $336/mt FOB Lethbridge for November/December.  Some buyers are reporting that demand is still strong right now for Barley because feedlots are buying hand to mouth until Corn comes in.  We have had some requests for Corn and may have some opportunities as we get further into the season.

Feed Wheat is still in demand and not easily coming to the market yet. Sellers, especially in the north, are waiting to see what their wheat grades before marketing it.  Feed wheat prices today are approximately $410/mt delivered Lethbridge for November.

Oats are on the rise!  Current seasonal oat bids are making record highs.   Demand is there but finding sellers to market has been a challenge.  This week we have been seeing bids for #2CW Oat as high as $6.50/bu delivered Central Alberta.

Seller’s tip:  If your needing movement for cash flow now might be the time, prices are strong and there still seems to be some opportunity to move in the next 3-4 weeks.  Let’s strategize together, call us at 1-888-969-5552.
