Who’s Next?

By June 5, 2019Newsletter
As I flip through the ReMax listing for farms and land for sale it has me thinking about the next generation. I am constantly hearing from my parents how high land prices have gotten in the last few years and how can someone even get ahead now a days, especially with the soaring interest rates and all the input costs that go into farming. To this the reply is usually “You can’t, no matter how hard you try it is getting harder and harder to get ahead in this industry.” With the rising prices how is one to get started farming or even become a part of the family farm that currently exists. I for one have started considering buying land to contribute more to the family farm, but after seeing prices and all the factors that come along with that the dream is seeming farther away. One might say the only way to get into agriculture is to be passed down everything, which is an option for some but for many it’s not.

Many people are getting out of the industry due to numerous factors and reasons. This may be due to age, health, maybe it’s not profitable enough. Whatever the reason may be we are still losing farmers constantly, especially with the average age of farmers increasing. We need to start considering the next generation. Who will be the next ones to raise our food? To work long hours and work until they can no longer bear the stress of everything? This is one industry that is a thankless industry with many challenges. Some may decide even though they may have grown up in the industry there are too many factors that hold them back from being successful. Some may want to become a part of the industry and start a farm from the ground up, but the failure rate is too high with all the factors of starting out and they aren’t able to make their dream a reality. The odds are ever against us.
One thing is for sure, we will need to start worrying about who will be the next to step in and replace those leaving. Something will need to give soon for the next generation to get their foot in the door. This is something greater than each of us individually and is something we need to work together as an industry on. One thing is for sure, if we keep continuing at this rate we will be wondering who our next providers will be.

Market Report –   by Nelson Neumann

Barley : The feed barley market is as hot as hot can be. A combination of increased demand as well as limited supplies of both barley and substitute products is cranking up the heat. For the second year in a row across the province it is quite dry causing significantly less than ideal forage situations. Another substitute product corn has also seen its pricing surge on the back of delayed seeding in the American Midwest. Prices have been heard as high as $280/MT into feedlot alley in southern Alberta. This is a weather market however, and rainfall to restore pasture conditions will seriously cool off the feed barley markets.

Wheat: The feed wheat market has hopped on the same pricing rally train as feed barley. Feed wheat bids have jumped ~$0.30/bushel around many areas of the province. Milling wheat has also seen a strong rally. This week however, the milling markets have been dropping double digit dollars per metric ton. We have seen large jumps both up and down day to day. The durum market has been firming up and holding their gains.

Peas : Over the past two weeks we have seen a couple yellow pea opportunities pop up with buyers bidding a premium ($0.25) into both the Edmonton and Calgary areas for quick first half June movement. Red lentils have also begun to show signs of trending higher.

Canola: At last there is some good news on the canola front. Pricing has been trending up slowly and beginning to make the slightest start at recovering; peaking last week as high as $460 for July. Wet conditions in the mid-west have strengthened market prices across the board and canola was no exception. You can see the future trends below courtesy of www.barchart.com.

Oats: Oats pricing remains strong and unchanged. There are occasionally pockets of stronger pricing for quick movement both in the milling and feed oat markets. Have heard as high a $4.00 delivered for feed oats into southern Alberta. The new crop market is trading at a heavy discount to the old crop market with bids sub $3.00 until 2020.

Buyer Brief –   by Sandra Correia-Letendre
The Rally continues!  Buyers are hungry and supply is low, prices are reaching new highs.  It is like a true rally race, buyers are anxiously waiting for new offers to post (ready, set, go). The one who hits the buy button first wins the race.  It’s an exciting time to be a grain broker.  In this upward market we are seeing the frustration of buyers, be it to find the grain, pay high prices and to settle for the demands of the seller.  We have been seeing the highest demand for Barley, both old and new crop.  Following behind is Feed Wheat and Feed Oats.

New Crop barley is in high demand. Some sellers are hesitant to sell right now and over commit until they see what happens with the weather.  Luckily, we see rain in the forecast this week for some parts of Alberta.  Hopefully in the next week or so farmers will get more confident and we can see more New Crop Barley coming to the table to sell.

Will the market level off in the next week or will we see some new highs?  Either way, we appreciate all buyer’s persistence and patience to push through this upward market.

Seller’s Tip:  Sellers, it’s your market right now and we don’t know how long it’s going to last.  Don’t delay marketing your grain, especially Barley, Feed Wheat and Feed Oats. Look forward to hearing from you, we are here to help.  Call 1-888-969-5552.
