Market Report – by Nelson Neumann

Barley: The feed barley market has seen some life within the past week. The delayed harvest and snowy weather is finally causing some concern with prices climbing $10/MT into Lethbridge feedlots. The barley pricing has been steady sliding since the beginning of August and this poor weather put a stop to that. There is still lots of crop out there and barley supplies are still expected to be ample. The price could easily crash back down to $195 if it all comes off suddenly. Another concern this year is the amount of high moisture barley. There are homes that are able to take it at higher levels, but it is important to be up front with what it is testing. A surprise high moisture load can get discounted heavily or rejected, but if everyone is on the same page, we can work with it.

Wheat: Milling wheat prices have climbed higher. There is a looming snowstorm that is going to hit a key wheat growing region in the United States where 9% of the spring wheat remains in the field. The demand for high protein wheat also continues to rise. Buyers are needing it and, when needed, are paying up for it.

Canola: Canola pricing has been creeping slowly upwards recently. This is in part due to snow across areas of the prairies. It feels like déjà vu but there is renewed optimism in reaching an agreement in the American Chinese trade war. The Soy complex has been in the green for a few days and Canola has slid upwards as well.

Peas: The pea market has been holding steady and is still under some harvest pressure. Yellow pea bids still range from $5.80-$6.00 FOB farm depending on location for October delivery. Green Peas have firmed up slightly and $8.00 FOB farm is inching closer.

Oat: Oats are as steady as ever. The delayed harvest is preventing them from coming off the field, but they are starting to arrive. Bids for both feed and milling oats remain strong although buyers are pushing for delivery to occur late 2019 early 2020 already.

Buyer Brief – by Sandra Correia-Letendre

We have seen some stabilization in the market this week with slight upturn on feed grain prices. Yesterday buyers were back in action. Mostly bidding on Wheat, Barley and Oats for Oct/Nov delivery. This must be due to last minute loads needed for feedlots as many farmers still have not been able to get on the fields to get their grain off.

As this harvest delays, we may be seeing feed prices continually going up. Buyers still seem to feel prices will go down with harvest around the corner. Some challenges buyers and sellers have faced this season, with it being wet, is a lot of high moisture feed grains and ergot showing up in barley. The ergot is definitely a concern for feedlots and hog operations, as they can’t take any ergot. Some buyers seem to be getting filled up with what they can take for high moisture grain for immediate movement. We do still have a pocket of specific buyers that look for high moisture grain. We are seeing a premium for wheat with high protein and dry/quick moving barley for end of October delivery.

Harvest keeps getting closer. Let’s hope the weather cooperates and we can get rolling with this season’s trading.

Seller’s tip: If farmers are not in a rush for bin space and have the option of drying down their grain, it may be in their best interest. Let’s get the best price for your grain, call us at 1-888-969-5552.

All the buyers at Agfinity can Make it happen. Fast turn around times on every thing. Movement, payment, and the inbetween  that all of us farmers don’t see or care about.
