The Spaceship Has Landed

By October 18, 2017Newsletter
“Positive vibes only!!” Michelle shouted from the upper bowl at Rogers Place arena in Edmonton last night. But her vigor was quickly drowned out by an onslaught of boos and ‘
I-need-another-beer’
s.

Though there was hope for an Edmonton Oilers comeback in the third period, the recovered optimism was quickly snuffed by a shorthanded Carolina Hurricanes goal. We were on our way to losing our fourth game in a row, and aside from a few superfans and Michelle, nobody believed we could pull it off.

With 40 seconds remaining, fans started to clear out. “Perhaps if I’m one of the first few hundred people out of here,” they thought, “I will still feel like a winner tonight.”

We stayed in our seats. With twelve seconds left, Michelle was still cheering as though a miracle was about to happen. It never came, but this is one of the things I love most about Michelle. She wholeheartedly believes in believing.

Nobody reads books about the power of negative thinking, yet, a lot of us are masters in this field. When things aren’t going our way, it can be tempting to paint a picture of the worst-case scenario.

I admit. This is a huge fault of mine.

After informing me that half the footage for an upcoming Agfinity video had been lost in a technological glitch a couple weeks ago, my friend Jesse didn’t sleep too well that night… And it was because of my gift of imagining the worst possible outcomes before they happened… It wasn’t until we discussed the issue with Joseph the next day that we were able to see it as a fixable problem. Thanks Joseph!
And wouldn’t you know it! This Monday, we rerecorded, and if we say so ourselves, even improved upon the original footage!  … stay tuned!

Though good things happen, until they do, believing can be a struggle… After a couple hard-hitting harvests, it’s all too easy to forget when things went exactly as we’d hoped.
Our friend Cary from Saint Michael called this morning, “I need help,” he said, “It looks like a spaceship landed out here… And it’s all tough… Literally and figuratively.”

This is what we’re here for! And unlike fans at an Oilers game, we’re not going to abandon our seats when you need us most.

Jared & Michelle at the Oilers game
Positive vibes. They’re a tool you can use on and off the farm. And, you know what’s better…? They are absolutely free!

Market Report
–
by Tracy Green

Barley: We are still seeing steady demand for feed barley for immediate movement and through November-December, but prices have been flat with not much strength seen yet into winter months. Corn trading into Lethbridge feedlots has put a ceiling on barley bids at about $207-208/mt delivered Lethbridge for Nov-Dec but how this will affect the barley market ahead is still yet to be seen. Cold weather in the winter months and less acres/lower yields could strengthen prices in the coming year.

Wheat:  Feed wheat prices softened recently with delivered Edmonton bids at $5.20-5.30/bu and delivered Lethbridge at $5.60-$5.70/bu.  On a positive note, we have some good opportunities for higher moisture feed wheat that has given sellers options other than drying or waiting out the weather. Gradable wheat bids recovered about 15 cents per bushel, but protein discounts are still hammering sellers with protein under 13% for #1 and #2 HRS.

Oats: The story is much the same with oats, we have buyers looking now for good quality 2CW oats with good movement available.  Prices staying at about $3-3.05/bu delivered southern Alberta and and $2.60-2.70/bu delivered Edmonton area.

Canola:  Prices have recovered some with $11/bu picked up now available into the new year but markets are in a transition phase currently, waiting for harvest to finish. Difficult weather ahead could affect yields with about 15% of Canadian crop still to be harvested.

Peas: It’s not too exciting for peas currently.  Limited export and producers selling off combine has kept prices low.  We should see a market recovery once harvest pressure lifts.

The Buyer Brief
–
Joseph Billett

Not much has changed for buyers in the last 2 weeks. Prices have been relatively flat and coming down as Feedlots get more coverage for the nearby.  The reality and threat of Corn into Lethbridge and the Lower Mainland in BC has kept a hard ceiling on Barley and Wheat prices.  Buyers are very interested in Wheat but need to know the protein, ergot, vomi, moisture specs, and, if possible, falling numbers.
There are many different buyers available for all specs of Wheat this year.  Decent Barley bids are still available, maybe not hitting seller expectations, but demand is still strong for Barley, which may change if Corn takes center stage in Lethbridge. Would love to hear your thoughts on current markets!

“For the past five years I’ve been dealing with the Agfinity group and what a fantastic group of people they are. From number 1 to feed grain and canola. All the buyers at Agfinity can Make it happen. Fast turn around times on every thing. Movement, payment, and the inbetween  that all of us farmers don’t see or care about. Good job to the Agfinity crew and keep on buying our grain.”
