Leadership on the Farm

By March 17, 2021Newsletter

“Good Leadership and Good Management go Hand in Hand”

Words spoken by Con Borsheim to a large gathering of farm producers at an Agribition presentation back in 2012.

Con is my grandpa and mentor. He spent 30 years being an innovative hands-on farmer in Watrous SK area. He then became a farm business advisor and spent about 20 years advising many producers and colonies in central & northern Saskatchewan. He spent the last 5 years of his life as a manager/CEO of Parkland Ventures, a unique farm business operation in Humboldt area. He was convinced that many of the principles and business models used in large corporations are necessary for farm success.

As I am relatively new to the ag-industry, I appreciate all the wise and innovative advice I have gotten from past and present peers, colleagues & customers. Much of it is applicable to 2021 a time where grain prices have been some of the highest we’ve seen since 2008, we also see corresponding fertilizer/input pricing. How does farm management and leadership tie into this?  A producer might have great agronomy and marketing know-how, or have the accounting skills of a banker but if those who work on the farm don’t share the same values the leader does, success on the farm may become a challenge.

From an article in 2012 CountryGuide issue here are a few examples that Con identifies what he believes makes good leadership/management on the farm:

  • Have a clear vision & values; If you don’t know where you’re going, how will you know when you get there?
  • Your vision becomes part of the value system by picking employees with a passion for modern farming. Look for skills but character is key…attitude is more important in some cases than experience.
  • Communication: act as a catalyst for mutual trust and respect among those engaged in the operation. A good leader will insist in clarity of roles & responsibility creating an atmosphere of excellence, so we don’t simply leave it for someone else to do.
  • Everything matters; Look for 20 opportunities for one percent improvements, rather than the impossible single opportunity of 20 percent. Marketing depends on production at costs that allow for profits in the current markets, which creates the financial strength to give all the people great returns.

I will end with my favorite bit of advice from Grandpa Con… “Plan, Do, & Review. Identify what you don’t know and how to find management services required to balance your farm management and continue to get better and better”.

Because Farming is Forever

Market Report – by Daniel McEachern

HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY.

March 17th, St. Patrick’s Day, a gorgeous strong 11 degrees in Edmonton. With outdoor hockey rinks closed and all sliding hills now melted and showing grass, the winter is in the rear-view mirror. Summer sporting goods are filling stores from mountain bikes to baseball gear, etc. People have been out running, biking and still trying to respect the social distance initiative. This will be easier as the warmer weather will allow people to meet at a distance outside in parks and back yards. Moreover, the pandemic in North America is now over 1 year old and is definitely at the top of the least celebrated anniversaries in history (If not, it should be). According to History.com, St. Patrick’s Day started more than 1,500 years ago and the first celebrations were in the 17th Century. March 17th was the anniversary of the death of St. Patrick in the 5th Century. Lastly, and perhaps the most interesting is that St. Patrick was actually born in Britain. Happy St. Patrick’s Day to All.

CAD/USD – Since our last report, the Canadian dollar has experienced more gains as the Loonie continues to rise in value compared to its US counterpart. The Loonie has been trading in the 0.7851 range which was the high from our last report and a recent high of 0.8038. The Loonie seen the 30-day lows on February 26th when it was trading at 0.7851 with the highs on March 16 at 0.8038 with a current value of 0.8012 on St. Patrick’s Day. As stated previously, the increase is in part due to the re-opening with a bullish sentiment in oil prices as the world is betting on vaccines to open the global economy.

Canola – According to PDQ.com 1 CDA Canola is trading at $772.72/MT FOB on average of the Peace, North and Southern Alberta regions. This represents a $85.96/MT premium since February. 1 CDA Canola is trading on an average of $756.79 in Saskatchewan and an average of $761.80 in Manitoba. March 12, Canola had edged up to new highs and has been trading primarily sideways, while slightly decreasing which displays a consolidation phase or setting up for a potential squeeze. The longer the consolidation period the greater the expected future move to either the upside or the downside. With the global demand maintaining and as we move further into the spring/summer months, I would expect to see a move upward, even for a short term.

Barley – As we move farther into the spring/summer months the price of Barley is increasing and the availability is decreasing. Recently, prices have been recorded as high as $282-293/MT FOB Edmonton for March movement. Deferred movement for April – May – June has been recorded at $295- $300/MT. New crop (NC) offers have seen prices range from $230/MT to $240/MT for September and $250/MT to $262/MT Oct-Dec, FOB Edmonton. As the price of feed grain has increased and availability has decreased, reports have stated that certain feeders have been switching to alternative feeds such as corn to reduce the risk of trying to find Barley.

Wheat – 1 CWRS 13.5 has also seen a healthy rally and is currently trading on average of $287.35/MT throughout Alberta, a $2.12/MT discount from last month. Saskatchewan is trading at an average of $274.54/MT and $268.69/MT in Manitoba. The prices in Saskatchewan and Manitoba also reflect a small single digit reduction in price per /MT. 1 CWRS 13.5 is expected to increase in value from the current spot price today to the end of July at $295.87/MT and pull back to mid-$270’s for new crop. Feed wheat has been trading at $260-$272/MT for March with A-M-J trading at $285/MT-$300/MT, FOB Edmonton. In certain circumstances past trades have demonstrated the strong demand for feed Wheat as feed has traded above the price of #1 CWRS 13.5.

Peas – 2 Yellow peas were trading at an average of $362.00/MT in Alberta which is a $5.10/MT premium from the previous month, $358.80351.41/MT in Saskatchewan a $7.39/MT premium. Manitoba has seen a significant change in price from the $327.48 in January to the $353.04/MT today, a $25.56/MT premium in 2 months. 2 Yellow peas are expected to increase from current spot price to a high of $394.04 at the end of June before retracing to around $344.69 in August. The demand for yellow peas has not changed since last month and China is still predominately driving the price. However, the demand for Canadian Peas may soften as Ukraine is trying to strike a deal to supply China. #2 Green pea bids have been heard around $9.00 – $9.50/bu FOB farm for Mar-Apr movement. New crop Pea offers are priced near the $9/bu FOB Farm Sep-Dec MVMT.

Oil – As of St. Patrick’s Day, price has increased significantly as the US oil benchmark West Texas Intermediate has reached $64.18 per barrel for WTI’s April contract. Western Canadian Select (WCS) the Canadian benchmark has been trading at $53.21 per barrel. This is significant because the price of oil is now trading somewhat range bound within the $60 range. This would demonstrate that the world is bullish on re-opening and that the extremely low oil prices and negative prices seen throughout the pandemic may not be seen again or at least not expected in the next few years. Moreover, natural gas has pulled back to the 2.52 MM/BTU.

Thank you Ron Larson for this great photo!

Buyer Brief – by Kyler Tluchak

With the temperatures on the upswing, it finally feels like spring is around the corner. Daylight savings as per usual is leading into longer days and a bit of a reprieve after a long COVID winter. I briefly opened the garage the other day letting some sun and fresh air in on my 1965 Thunderbird—but still a bit too messy out for a drive.  Market has continued to be rather quiet on our end as heavy coverage for March and into April offers have seen little movement off the board and more deferred options coming to the table for May-June +.

Barley offers have slowed as the little old crop that remains up for grabs is still fetching high prices with the market seemingly at a plateau for now. Recent pickups around the capital region seeing around $280/MT-$285/MT FOB for MAR-APR movement and out into MAY-JUN around the $295/MT mark. Heading down south DLVD Lethbridge $305/MT-$310/MT MAR-APR. Out into May/Jun still seeing prices hold around the $315/MT-$320/MT DLVD mark.  New crop offers slowly coming to the board however with the volatile swings in the past six-twelve months seeing hesitation on any firm positions yet.

Wheat particularly feed has also seen a plateau in pricing as tight movement MAR/APR homes are closing in quick. Recent pickups around the Peace Region still fetching between $7.60/BU- $7.80/BU and bids north of EDM in the same range. Out past APR into MAY-JUN seeing around the $7.85/BU-$7.90/BU mark in the north/capital region.  South towards Calgary area seeing $8.00/BU out past $8.10/BU FOB farm MAR-APR. Large spreads on pricing, however we’re seeing bids largely within close proximity especially movement outward past APR around the $7.80/BU mark south of the capital region.

Hot opportunity and special pickup as per usual–heated canola.  Recent offers around 30% mark still pulling bids around $10.50/BU up to $12.00/BU for MAR/APR movement. Green canola as well seeing interest as around 20-40% greens pulling in around + – $11.50/BU for MAR/APR movement.
