Giving a “Selfish Gift”

By December 4, 2019Newsletter

2019 has not been an easy year for many. There are those that had it too dry and others that had it too wet. There are many with crops still in the field, under snow. Looking beyond agriculture there have been job losses and industry downsizing in various sectors throughout our province leading to harder times for many more.

Despite the trials and hardships of 2019, many of us are still blessed with more than enough. The Christmas season always brings this home for me at a higher level. When I look at my children knowing that we have more than enough to bless them over the season and then think about those that look at their children and wish they could do the same but the struggles of the day to day don’t allow for additional at Christmas, it inspires giving for us. Each year, as a family, we aim to pick a family that we don’t know, but that we can lavish a little bit of Christmas cheer on. We involve our kids by going shopping for gifts for the children in the chosen family and even the grocery hamper items. Giving inspires such joy and selflessness. I love to see how our kids get so excited and involved in the giving process.

This time of year, there are requests and demands for our donations and attention everywhere we turn. It can be overwhelming and stressful. While we understand that at Agfinity we still want to do our part to give back. As the Agfinity Family, this year we are working to pass on a bit of that Christmas blessing and cheer by collecting for our local Parkland Food Bank here at the office. We have been blessed and wish to pay that forward. We hope that you too have more than enough and, if so, will participate with us as part of your 2019 Christmas Season giving. We will have a donation basket setup at Agfinity throughout December to gather much needed items for those in need. If you are bringing a sample by, stopping in to chat with your trader or just swinging by for a visit (I’m sure there will be some chocolates kicking around), please consider bringing a non-perishable food donation for the Parkland Food Bank.

As the Christmas Season begins in earnest and demands for your attention and giving are coming at you from all sides, take a moment to find the joy in the things that you can do. We all have something to give, whether it be time, attention, donations, or just a kind word or action. Give a “selfish gift” of what you can and reap the joy of that giving. From the Agfinity Family to yours, we wish you a Christmas season filled with joy and a blessed and prosperous 2020.

Market Report – by Nelson Neumann

Barley: The feed barley markets were showing signs of softening towards the very end of November which came to fruition the first couple days of December. Feedlot alley bids for December/January tumbled ~$10/mt down to $223/mt. Calling it December/January is generous as lots of buyers are bought up for December and trucks are hard to come by. Rather than looking for factors as to why the market dropped the question is why was it propped up to begin with? In my opinion this is a correction back to equilibrium. The market had been elevated with trucking shortages in southern Alberta as well as speculation with the CN strike. The forecast is calling for a milder winter and with spring threshed grain coming to the market in the spring it looks like there is little upside potential at the moment.

Canola: Canola is drifting lower riding negative headlines and the rest of the oilseed market. The Stock markets were rocked with Trump suggesting that a trade deal wouldn’t be in place till at least 2020. The talks have soured recently and looks like a complete agreement is a long way off. Further compounding poor canola outlook is Brazil’s soybean crop is estimated to be 5% larger than average this year.

Wheat: Similar to Canola milling wheat futures softened on overall negative economic headlines. On a brighter note there are rumblings of a possible durum shortage in Europe which could bring life to Southern Alberta and Saskatchewan durum prices. With feed barley tumbling feed wheat did as well although not quite as steeply. Feed wheat bids are heard around $220/mt into feedlot alley.

Oats: With everything else falling good old oats are holding their value. Demand is pushed back into Feb/March 2020 at the earliest with some summer contracts flying around already. It’s completely anecdotal but in our office, we saw quite a few oats offers come to the market both feed and milling.

Peas: Green peas remain red hot with bids heard as high as $11.50 delivered in Central Alberta. Yellow peas are slowly climbing as well with $7.00 delivered prices available. This is a much-needed increase from the harvest lows where were seeing as low as $6.15. Hopefully we see the pulse market continue to climb in the new year!

Thanks Pinehill Cattle Company’s Jason Hofer for the great photo submission!

Buyer Brief – by Sandra Correia-Letendre

With this mild winter weather brings a soft market. Buyers have pulled back and sellers are staying firm. Trades have been tough, and sellers are still not in agreement with the change in the market. The market further dropped this week. This could be due to the CN being back in action and the US thanksgiving being over. As well, buyers seem covered for December and more focused on buying out. We are not seeing high demand right now overall.

The last few days Barley prices seem to be dropping quicker than Wheat. Barley delivered Lethbridge as of yesterday was approximately $223-$225/mt for Dec/Jan. This is approximately $7/mt drop from last week. We are also not seeing much carry for Jan from Dec for most grain commodities. My position on the market this week is neutral. In talking with a few buyers, they are feeling the market may stay at this level for a bit here.

Looking forward to seeing next week if we have more of a meeting ground with seller’s and buyers and if demand will start going back up again. Until then have a great week.

Seller’s tip: If you need movement in December, time is ticking, especially because many trucks may not be working the last couple of weeks Of December with Christmas around the corner. Call us today to get your grain moved asap, 1-888-969-5552.
