As I’m sure you gathered from my rendition of the ever-catchy, Heart and Soul song, my oldest daughter Victory has taken up piano this year.

An awfully generous man with a beard – who must have great risk assessment software to keep his north pole operation profitable – granted her wish and gifted her a lightweight keyboard this past Christmas, which, coincidentally, was also on sale at Amazon.ca. And though she also received an iPad mini from her just-as-generous grandparents who topped up the remainder of her savings account, the piano has really struck a chord… I’ll humbly accept nominations for best pun of the year on that one.

… There’s something magical about watching your kids practice. And unless you’re a Canadian hockey parent, it doesn’t really matter what they’re practicing, so long as it’s not illegal or overly nerdy…

I also share a non-biological child that makes me proud. But before you go and fire up the ole rumour mill, I’m obviously talking about Agfinity! … Standing tall with 7 harvests under his belt, Agfinity has come a long way in a relatively short time.

…But you better believe it! Agfinity is only going to get better! And, as one of his parents, I’m making sure of that!

Take 2017 for example… Agfinity is learning to fly this year!

Barley
: “Barley continues to slide down the profitability rankings list for next year as malt buyers continue to give poor responses to forward pricing,'” stated a central Alberta market analyst. The feed barley market outlook isn’t great moving forward. We’ve seen delivered Lethbridge prices drop to $3.40-3.45/bushel this week with most buyers covered through to April. April – May delivered Lethbridge bids now at $3.45 – $3.50/bu.

Wheat: Feed wheat bids have softened but there is still fairly good demand for heavy, dry feed wheat. Higher moisture feed wheat still difficult to find homes for. Many Alberta feedlots have been able to buy wheat out of Saskatchewan at lower levels which has them sitting with very good coverage. Your best pricing opportunities are with Alberta and BC feed Mills who are still looking for good quality feed wheat that is heavy and dry, with under 3% other grains and low vomi.

Oats: Oat prices holding steady with a 5-10 cent carry per month for good quality 2CW milling oats. We still have a few buyers looking for 3CW oats weighing 40-42 lbs, up to 14% moisture. Feed oats prices have not changed much in the past month and homes are available if your looking to move some quickly. Prices range from under $2/bu up to $2.20/bu depending on your location.

Canola: Canola bids have recovered in 2017 and this is a good pricing opportunity for growers. Targets of $12/bu dlvd are being hit for May, and $11.70-11.75/bu for March delivery. New crop canola bids heard at $11/bu delivered. Check your bins for any signs of heating. We do have homes available for heated canola if you’re needing to get some moved, but don’t delay, this market revolves entirely around supply and demand, and supply is unfortunately growing.

Peas: Green and yellow pea bids have come off slightly with buyers paying $8.75 – 9.00/bu for greens and $8.25-8.50/bu for yellows. Higher bleached greens $7.50 – 7.80/bu dlvd. Buyers still on the hunt for feed peas and bids heard at $6.10-6.15/bu picked up. Call us with offers!

The Buyer Brief

Barley prices have been eroding over the past week, but to many sellers that work with us consistently this may seem untrue. However, there are certain markets like this where the price can remain flat, but the buyers are constantly changing. 1-2 weeks ago, many grain companies (Resellers) could buy, margin intact, but the buyers who are currently setting the price are feedlots and they are now seeing coverage out to April and are now pulling their bids back. Nearby options remain with resellers covering holes, and further out pricing opportunities are with feedlots. Grain is coming to market quickly, buyers can easily buy at their bid today and don’t need to hit counters.
